The remodel designers seem to have taken inspiration from the Lifestyle v2 design, as the bakery decor again looks like an extension of the deli, this time with sub-department signs extending off the deli's sign band. As recently as 2021, Safeway donuts and bagels were still 79 cents each according to the signs here; for a while recently, they were nearly twice that, which is way too much for a mediocre Safeway donut! That made them even more expensive than QFC's Top Pot-branded donuts, which are way better (even if they're nowhere near as good as real Top Pot donuts). Prices have dropped a little bit since then, but they're still $1.29 each, and that's still way more than they're worth.
$1.29 each! Yikes! I went to the Randall's website and donuts at Randall's are 99 cents each or $7.99 for a dozen. Since bakery clearance carts are used at Randall's, that's the best way to get a good price on Randall's donuts. They're far superior to what Kroger sells around here so at least there is that, but I wouldn't pay 99 cents for a donut!
ReplyDeleteSomehow, the California stores had them even cheaper than that, under a dollar each! (Well, that was last year, so I don't know if they're more expensive now.) I don't remember seeing donuts on their clearance carts, though.
DeleteOn the good news front, I did get a Randalls for U digital coupon this week for $1 off any $1 or higher bakery purchase. Of course, at 99 cents each, I'd have to buy 2 donuts to use that coupon, but that's still a pretty good deal I suppose. I got a similar coupon for the produce department. I'm not sure if the Seattle division gives out useful coupons.
DeleteWow! Just for U used to have coupons like that when it was new, but Safeway hasn't been that generous in many years. The only way to get that sort of free stuff these days is to spend rewards points (the same ones you can use for gas discounts).
