Continuing along the back actionway, it's not long before the aisles abruptly end and are replaced by the very large service department island, which seems to be a common feature in older Pavilions stores. Off to the right is an alcove that almost looks as if it would belong in a Grocery Palace-layout Albertsons, home to an extension of the dairy department (despite the different wall color); that island of tall upright cases seems like somewhat of a strange design choice, in place of the usual coffin coolers or mid-height display cases. I wonder if that's another original Pavilions thing or something Safeway added later.
