The deli and bakery signs look even more elaborate than the produce sign, with the big structure cantilevered off of the soffit. I'm glad that at least one store around here got a fairly early Airport remodel -- I can't imagine Walmart will keep such nice, elaborate decor in production for very long!
I like this element of Airport. This is a huge step up from Bogle.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is!
DeleteMaybe it's the all-caps and typeface, but this reminds me a bit of a bluer, more 3D, but yet cheaper looking version of Safeway Modern! All that said, at least from the angle the picture is taken from, the Walmart almost appears to look like a credible supermarket (at least one with an open ceiling and concrete floors). I don't know if I should congratulate Walmart or shame everyone else. Well, you probably know how I feel about that, lol.
ReplyDeleteCheck out these decade-old photos of a Dallas Tom Thumb with pre-Lifestyle decor. I think this was decor originally used by Randall's before the Safeway merger, but I don't remember for sure. Either way, there are Lifestyle touches around this store that otherwise uses decor that is surely foreign to you! For something more familiar to you, here is an Austin Randall's when it had proto-Lifestyle: https://flickr.com/photos/crumbs/318320515/
Huh, you're right, it kind of does! This sort of all-caps, vertically-stretched font seems to be a bit of a trend right now, not that I'm complaining. And yeah, the grocery side of this store does look surprisingly nice! It's the rest of the store where it starts turning into something a bit more like what you'd expect for Walmart, but it will be a while until we get there.
DeleteThose are some cool old pictures! That decor is certainly something I haven't seen before, but it's interesting to see that the promotional signage is exactly the same as what our Safeways were using in those days. These days, it seems like every division does its own thing.
