Here's another look across the massive, empty back actionway back towards the deli. I'm not sure why this space is so extraordinarily large in this store -- the obvious answer would be that the space ended up being too big for the sales volume at this store -- which is probably true, but maybe not the reason for this, as the raised ceiling around the perimeter seems to match quite well to the aisle width. Safeways are often built with a wider rear aisle in the milk section to allow for promotional displays, and maybe this was designed with that in mind -- it certainly is what this space was used for, though those were all long gone by this point in the closing sale.
