That was just a little distraction on the way to the other reason I visited Southcenter. Spirit Sears with a fake train was probably reason enough, but I was also interested in checking out one of the many attempts to reincarnate Toys R Us. This store is also the reason Spirit Sears existed at all -- Spirit used this space every year for quite some time, but for 2025, Toys R Us took it instead, bumping Spirit to the only other large vacancy in the whole mall. There's something amusing about seeing a Toys R Us in an old Spirit, especially since my only other Toys R Us content on this blog so far is visiting a Spirit in one of their old stores!
Neither Toys R Us nor Spirit returned to Southcenter for 2026. This space is set to become a permanent Bandai Namco store, though Sears is still sitting empty as far as I know; Spirit moved to a nearby strip mall, while Toys R Us decided to go for two of the least successful Seattle-area malls, the old Supermall in Auburn and South Hills Mall in Puyallup. (Not really sure what their thought was there, other than looking for cheap rent.)
