Even though Pak 'n Save was intended as a discount format, it still had the service departments you would expect from an 80s/early 90s Safeway: a bakery and a deli. (I'm not sure exactly what year this store opened, but it was probably around the time that service meat departments were becoming standard in new-build stores; still, it wasn't until the Lifestyle era that they became a particularly common sight at Safeway.) The deli here is surprisingly large, too, not too different from what I'm used to at Safeway today. The decor, on the other hand, is pretty awful, using a weird mixed uppercase/lowercase font and some seriously Clip Art-y graphics. I'm guessing that all of the dead floor space over here would have originally been filled with either deli displays or more bulk foods, leaving even more damaged flooring where those displays once were.

The clip art graphics here signal to me that this is probably from the 1990s, but who knows! The mixed case lettering on the deli sign is really strange. I could maybe understand if they put the 'deli' in all caps and 'catessen' in lowercase (I feel like I've seen that somewhere), but that isn't even the case here as it ends in an uppercase letter! Weird.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much of this store is really just a WinCo/Cub Foods knock-off. Knocking off those two was popular at one time. HEB did it with their HEB Pantry Foods decor in the early 1990s, even though they were much smaller stores than the typical WinCo or Cub Foods operation.
