They even went with special extra-small checkouts for this small store, featuring a half-size upstream belt and seemingly no downstream belt. Now I have to wonder why Safeway didn't do this in other smaller/older stores! Even the smallest Safeway I've ever visited used full-size checkouts, taking up way more room than seems reasonable. I guess that's just another sign of the cookie-cutter approach Safeway was infamous for in the Lifestyle era.
