I visited this store on July 4th, 2019, which explains the grill kiosk set up out front! I saw this at several Safeways I visited on the 4th of July, and Street View from June 2023 shows that they were setting up for this again, seemingly with the same exact banner from four years earlier. As for why I'm posting this store now, in July of this year (so almost exactly six years after my visit), Anonymous in Houston revisited this store and found it in pretty much the exact same condition as on my visit (though bizarrely, the logo above the door was swapped out for a new one in 2024, while the Safeway Food & Drug text was left!).

Hey, I know this store! Yep, as Northwest Retail said, I visited the Newberg Proto Lifestyle Safeway this past July. Our first overnight point after arriving at PDX was Newberg and so we bought plenty of travel supplies from this Safeway and that allowed me to relive Proto Lifestyle memories and memories of the older Safeway ribbon logo even though these exterior signs were swapped out a year before my visit.
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed shopping at this Safeway. The Proto Lifestyle decor elements were still in good shape, something you certainly wouldn't expect from 20-25 year old Kroger decor elements! We got a good deal on some very tasty Northwest cherries, much better ones than what we get here in Houston. Furthermore, the deli had some huge pieces of fried chicken. I had never seen fried chicken which looked so big before! Not bad for cheep chicken!
It's not like Safeway has a monopoly in Newberg as there is a Fred Meyer across the street from this store. It's hard to explain how this store has evaded a remodel, but like I said, it didn't really feel dated so I'm glad it kept Proto Lifestyle at least until this past summer.
