Behind barbed wire

Stepping back, here's one last picture, showing the road sign with the abandoned auto center on the left (it appears that this was reused as a "smog check" place for a short time after the main store closed, but even that seems to have closed well before the first Street View capture in 2007) and the restaurant in the background. Across the street is an Aldi, and I'm not sure why I didn't stop in there since I've been wanting to check out an Aldi for a long time -- I think I was just getting nervous about the car getting broken into since I had already left it parked for a while in this fairly sketchy area!

Ha, you didn't miss much by skipping the visit to Aldi! We did stop at a Grocery Outlet in La Pine, OR on our vacation and, quite frankly, the Grocery Outlet is probably a lot more interesting than an Aldi. That said, if you want to visit an Aldi, you'll have a lot of opportunities to do so on your vacation! In fact, the first Aldi Sud I ever visited was a Hofer in Austria back in 2005!

Je of the Louisiana & Texas Retail Blog found an old Montgomery Ward sign at the former Amigoland Mall in Brownsville, TX on the Texas-Mexico border which, while it has a newer style logo than what you have here, it ended up in a pretty similar state: https://southernretail.blogspot.com/2020/05/amigoland-mall-brownsville-texas-march.html

    1. Yeah, I'm sure I'll get to an Aldi sometime on this trip -- we'll be in Aldi territory pretty much the entire time! But even if I do visit a real German Aldi, I wouldn't mind checking out an American one at some point.
