Welcome to the Star Lake (Federal Way) Safeway!

We've been looking at a lot of newer, larger grocery stores lately, so I think it's about time to return to my favorite kind -- the old, small ones! This Safeway was built in 1972 and seems to have avoided any major changes ever since, retaining its 25,000 square foot size -- far from the smallest Safeway I've ever visited, but still half the size of their newest stores.

I think there may have been plans to expand or rebuild this store at some point, considering the strange vacant section of the property between the road sign and the parking lot. Or maybe they were considering putting in a gas station here -- the grass area is about the right size and shape for that. Whatever the deal is, this store is strangely tucked away from the road (and apparently didn't even have a road sign until the current one was installed circa 2010, according to Street View), but still seems to be pretty busy. You can also see Rainier peeking out above the store itself, which is probably the reason I took this strangely-angled picture!
