Dreaming of toasters

Small appliances ended up haphazardly dumped on some rolling racks in the corner of the mattress department, seemingly all on clearance. This department seems to have been on its way out, as Sears has completely gotten rid of the housewares/small appliances department in the years since this visit (or at least shrunk it to the point where I haven't noticed it).

Hey, I think that black fridge might be similar to the one I have, but mine is in white. It looks pretty similar, but mine is getting close to being a decade old so maybe it isn't exactly the same. That stainless one is probably similar to mine as well, but I refuse to acknowledge that a stainless disaster is similar to mine, lol.

Back during the George Foreman grill craze of the 1990s, it was perhaps not inconceivable that someone would dream of a George Foreman grill. These days, that's probably not as likely to happen, but I guess Sears has a George Foreman grill for those who do dream about them! I don't think George Foreman grills are as irrelevant these days as Sears is, but they're probably getting close.

Back when the Sears Hometown Store opened here in 2022, they did have some Kenmore small appliances, but it all looked like stuff that was old inventory that didn't sell or was shipped in from another closing store. I wonder what happened to all of that stuff when Sears Hometown closed. Heck, it probably ended up at this Sears! In fact,t hat red mixer might be one of those Kenmore mixers that they were trying to sell at the Hometown store. Granted, the one in the picture is probably an open-box item.

Now here is a neat new upload to the SMU Jones Film archives! They added a film clip, in true high resolution, from 1974 from WFAA-TV in Dallas where they did a news report about a special sales promotion at North Texas Kroger stores. In the clip are scenes from a Kroger Superstore I. It is hard to beat the quality of these SMU Jones Film videos given that they are 50 years old! Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tCG3ccccEA

    1. This is Sears/Kenmore, so it's quite possible that they were selling the same fridges in 2021 as they were in the mid-2010s! Sounds like we're on the same page when it comes to stainless steel too -- I recently had to buy a new dishwasher, and all of the appliance people I called seemed to think I was crazy for specifically wanting the white model! (I will say stainless steel is better than black, though -- I don't understand why people would want black appliances.)

Yeah, Sears probably had a lot of closeout stuff to sell in those days considering the rate at which they had been closing stores! There was sure a lot of clearance here, and I'm not sure how much of that was them downsizing this store and how much was having leftovers from other stores.

Cool stuff! It's too bad that DFW video is all exterior shots -- I'd love to see more stuff from that era from inside the terminals, especially with the original people mover system. DFW is a fascinating airport even today, and it was so ahead of its time when it was built. It's also by far the busiest airport in the US that I've never visited -- I really need to get there some day! (Too bad it's a hub for an airline that I'm not exactly a fan of...)

SMU Jones Film does have some videos about the original DFW Airtrans system. Here are a couple of them:

This isn't related to Airtrans, but it does have interior images at DFW:

DFW is a very big airport! Taxi times can be quite silly there given the size of the airport. I have not been there since 1992 (on a Lufthansa 747-200 no less), though I did stay at a motel on the edge of DFW in 1997. While American Airlines wouldn't be my first choice either, they do fly to a lot of domestic locations from DFW that United does not from IAH. I'm pretty sure I could have flown to Albany and Portland, ME nonstop from DFW, but that is just a dream at IAH.
