Despite all the changes on the outside of the frozen area, the only thing Save Mart changed out inside is the category markers. These are fairly recent, from Save Mart's current decor package; there were ones that went with the Save Mart package this store partially remodeled to (they have a similar look to the aisle markers), but older pictures of this store on Google Maps seem to show it largely devoid of category markers, with just a few Grocery Palace ones hanging around in certain departments. The original Grocery Palace floor is here too; I've never quite understood what Albertsons was going for with this design, which has a bit of a Southwest flair to it and doesn't seem to go with the frozen decor or conceptually with the frozen department (other department floor styles generally did one or the other of those).
Yeah, I never understood the floor design in this area. It does have a Southwestern look to it which, well, doesn't make any sense in a frozen food department! Shouldn't they have used snowflakes or something?
ReplyDeleteAt least the Southwestern colors here make more sense than my local Grocery Palace, the Krogertsons, which had this same design until a few days ago. While the design is the same, the Krogertsons Grocery Palace used teal and peach colors versus the teal and dark red seen here. Teal and peach certainly didn't age well much past 2000 and it was easily the most dated, worst looking design of the Grocery Palace floor elements that were at the Krogertsons. It kind of had a bit of a Golden Girls Winn-Dated Marketplace look to it, but not quite as bad!
I think that color scheme was a bit more common than this one. It may not have aged well, but at least it was a bit more subtle! The dark red here is really in-your-face and emphasizes the strange design. I'm not sure which I prefer.
