The combined meat-and-liquor section at the back of the store is a little weird, but towards the front of the store the aisle widens out to form the deli alcove, which is a much more common combination -- at least in Northwest Safeways! The deli is the only real service department this store has, but it's surprisingly comprehensive, including a significant prepared foods section, something that I've often found to be the case in older Safeways around here.
The position of the deli here wouldn't be unusual for a Safeway built by Safeway here either in the 1970s/1980s or in the Safeway-Randall's era. That said, since most of the Randall's here were built by Randall's before they were owned by Safeway, most of our stores have a power alley over by produce. So, with that, this positioning does feel a bit strange to me for a Safeway even though I shopped at Safeways like this for years during their first go around here!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Safeway definitely used this sort of layout for a long time! Even their newest stores tend to have the deli in a front corner, though it's now produce rather than liquor next to the deli.
