Old and new

There were plenty of modern, high-end appliances on display too, which certainly clashed with the aging display cabinetry and massively dated cash register system! The section of wall ovens and stand-alone cooktops is a bit worse than it looks at first glance, since there are several holes filled in with 2D cardboard fakes (which isn't super obvious from this low-quality picture), but I'm willing to give Sears a little bit of a break on that since those aren't nearly as popular these days as they probably were when the display setup was built.

Huh, I'm surprised to see this many built-ins, whether real or fakes, on display at a Sears! The Sears near me didn't have many, if any, built-in ovens and cooktops until The Great Indoors opened...if you even want to count that as being a Sears. After The Great Indoors closed, I seem to remember a few built-ins showing up at our Sears, but not nearly as many as what I see here! Then again, I only really gave the Sears appliance departments a good look over when I needed an appliance so it is possible I missed something. Also, this store seems quite large so maybe they just had more than most Sears stores. We had some large Sears stores here though.

Are built-ins not common these days? My brother's house was built in 2014 and he has built-ins. My house also has built-ins, but my house most certainly isn't new, lol.

    1. Interesting! I really have no context for what full-size Sears department stores are like. This store did have a pretty big appliance section, but I don't think it was that much bigger than what the Hometown store in Port Angeles had (and I'm pretty sure that store had at least some built-in appliances, though certainly nowhere near as much as what this store seems to have had.

Hmm -- I tend to think of built-ins as being more of a 60s-80s thing, but I could be wrong! I know I didn't see many of them when shopping for condos a couple years back, but that might also be because they're typically a higher-end thing (perhaps another reason they weren't a common sight at Sears) and I definitely wasn't looking at higher-end places!
