Raised front end

As a lot of you have already noticed, the front end at this store has the classic raised ceiling with angled security windows that both Safeway and Albertsons used through the 70s and 80s. It's definitely a bit of a dated look these days, but it's neat to see it still hanging on. I'm not sure what's up with all that taffy in the foreground, but man, now I want some Haggen taffy!

This is certainly a classic Safeway look here! I'm glad this look is still around under the Safeway umbrella, or Albertsons umbrella at the very least, even if the store is no longer a Safeway. The continuous security catwalk glass wasn't used in every Safeway division. Dallas, for example, used little squares with walls in between. For whatever reason, at least with this store, the design is very similar to what was used in Houston.

The security catwalk design is probably completely unnecessary these days with modern security camera technology, but this was such an intriguing design back in the day. I'm glad that AFB was able to get some photos from the other side of that Albertsons security catwalk. It is good to see what that looked like even though the Safeway catwalk was much more primitive than Albertsons' according to a former Krogway employee who saw AFB's photos.

    1. There are still a decent number of Safeways around here that have this sort of thing, either with or without the continuous windows! I'm guessing Safeway probably doesn't do much of anything with the space any longer, since their version seems to have just been a security catwalk rather than a full office mezzanine like Albertsons had.
