Clearly, this wasn't the first Safeway in Newport -- I wonder if the original one lasted all the way until when this store was built, or if there were multiple short-lived Safeways during those 49 years. Either way, this store is rapidly closing in on being as old as the original one would have been when the current store was built! And it's sure showing its age in this view, with all of those security window slits lining the front end, an interesting departure from the more-common continuous window. I imagine it's been many years since anyone used those windows for their intended purpose!

Although the continuous security catwalk window was common in Houston and it was used in some NW Safeways, other markets used the individual windows like we see here. In North Texas, for example, they used catwalk windows similar to what we see here. Here is an example of that at a Northeast Texas Krogway: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zBz6qPPrFjCdn26u8
ReplyDeleteInteresting! Seems like they were used more or less interchangeably around here.
