Vintage road sign

The giant road sign out front of this store is pretty neat too -- while it's clearly been modified overt the years, I'm pretty sure this is the original sign frame from when Safeway built this store in the 60s. The corrugated backdrop behind the Cardenas sign is a definite vintage touch!

The sign pole is almost certainly original or at least it is designed to be like the original. As for the rectangular sign frame itself, I don't know about that. It could be original as Safeway did use some rectangular signs, but here in Houston and in some other places, they liked to use diamond-shaped signs so I suppose it might not be original if this originally had a diamond-shaped sign. In all likelihood, the sign pole would have had a Safeway roundrel sign up at the top...maybe even a rotating one! That is obviously gone now.

That throwback style McDonald's in the back is pretty neat!

    1. Those diamond sign frames do seem to have been the most common style Safeway used in the Marina era, but I've seen quite a few different designs, including rectangular ones like this. Here's one that looks almost identical to this one. I agree about the rotating sign on top -- it's too bad that none of those seem to be left, though I do have one Safeway with a different sort of rotating sign in my backlog!
