Welcome to the Newport, WA Safeway!

Not to be confused with Newport, OR or the Newport neighborhood in Bellevue (both of which have Safeways of their own), this store is as far east as you can get in Washington -- the orange building in the background is across the line in Idaho! This store was built in 1980, and I'm not entirely sure it was always a Safeway, but I haven't done the research to be able to tell for sure -- the interior looks completely normal for Safeway, but the exterior less so.

  1. It is nice to see another 1980-built Safeway as my local Safeway, now Food Town, was built in 1980! Although the designs of the two stores are not entirely similar, there are some similarities so that is evidence in favor of this always being a Safeway. Also, the presence of the roundrel logo artifact there on the right indicates to me that this was built a Safeway as Safeway changed logos to the square one not long after this store would have been built. Finally, the interior clearly looks like a late 1970s-early 1980s style Safeway Superstore.

It is neat to finally see Colorful Lifestyle v2 in the Northwest! It is a taste of Texas in Washington...or Idaho if you want to count it as such, lol. Have you ever covered Idaho retail on this blog?

We have our own cross-border Safeway-Albertsons experience here in Texas. This Streetview image of the Texarkana, Arkansas Albertsons is actually taken from Texas! Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/c6AZdmfKixsB4ed56

I suppose Retail Retell would know for sure, but I'm almost positive that is the only presence Albertsons or Safeway has in Arkansas in current times at least. I could be wrong about that. It is kind of funny that Albertsons would have just one store in Arkansas, and thus have to learn all their laws, when Texas is just across the street! Oh well, it is neat that Albertsons is in Arkansas even if it is just barely.

    1. That all makes sense -- it's nice to know for sure (more or less) that this wasn't something else originally!

I haven't yet photographed any Idaho stores, unfortunately. I thought about it on this trip, since I drove through Idaho right after this store visit (unsurprisingly!), but didn't end up making any stops there. But I have covered Colorful Lifestyle v2 once before!
