What's under the burlap?

I took this picture focusing on the neat banana stand in the background, about the only point of visual interest in the produce department itself, but looking back on it I'm more interested in the display covered over with burlap! I really wonder what could be there that they felt the need to cover over well before the store closed for the day.

That is an interesting banana display. Of course, 78 cents/lb. for regular bananas is bananas even by Florida standards! Safeway and Fred Meyer has bananas for 59 cents/lb. in Oregon so these prices really are quite silly.

I wonder what the story is with that burlap cover. Perhaps the store was spraying pesticides above that display overnight and needed to cover the food? Perhaps using the covers overnight helps prevent bugs? Not sure.

    1. Everything in California is absurdly expensive! Raley's is a rather upscale chain, too, so no surprise it's even pricier.

Those are better thoughts than anything I could come up with -- I was thinking it might be to keep something from drying out, but that doesn't make sense since the burlap is clearly dry. I wish I had thought to look under the cover, but I was so hungry and focused on finding something for dinner that I don't think I even noticed it at the time!
