I'm glad Anonymous in Houston pointed out the Safeway logos on the Xs attempting to cover up the black hole above the dairy case and meat department here, as I absolutely didn't notice them in person or when reviewing my photos! I'm guessing all of the Xs originally had them and the missing ones have just fallen off over the years. This seems like a sign that Safeway was considering making open space above departments a standard thing in new-build stores, rather than it being a complete one-off for this store, and I'm glad that never happened!
