Ghost registers

The old upstairs checkout area has been pressed into service as part of the pickup area, awkwardly working around the original fixtures. This is an absolutely bizarre place to put the pickup space, since to get to the parking garage (which I'm assuming is where the pickup parking is, since there is no surface parking and the door just leads to the street... unless they're expecting people to search for street parking to use pickup, which would be its own kind of bizarre) would require the employees to go all the way to the other end of the upper level, take one elevator down to the main level, then take a separate elevator down to the garage. Perhaps that awkwardness is why they have a (handwritten, very unofficial) sign directing people on how to use "Pickup Walkup"!

  1. Interesting, I wonder if the actual registers this store uses are the kind like what we see here where the clerk has to take items directly off the cart rather than using a conveyor belt unloading system. For an upscale store like QFC, this type of register stand makes perfect sense! Of course, leaving behind zombie checkstands doesn't make any sense. I also see a Kroger logo on that back door! Maybe that's nothing unusual at a QFC has the Kroger logo will be all over the store brand products, but it's still a bit strange kind of like seeing an Albertsons logo at a Randall's!

    1. They used to be, but I believe they were changed out for standard ones with belts when the checkout area was rearranged in 2018. Beltless ones like this are still quite common at other QFCs, though! (I'm pretty sure most customers still unload their own groceries regardless.)

I suspect that Kroger logo is hanging out there since this is supposed to be an employee-only area, just one that's completely open to the salesfloor! But it's not that uncommon to see Kroger logos on random things that aren't supposed to be customer-facing at QFC and Fred Meyer, while at Safeway it's quite common to see Albertsons logos even on customer-facing things!
