As much as I like Modern, it tends to look quite sterile in some (though definitely not all) stores -- in fact, the version used these days is sometimes referred to in documents as "Modern Warm", which I believe refers to the colors added to some departments (such as green in produce) to try to break up that feeling. Unfortunately, this store is one of the more sterile-looking ones I've visited, especially in this shot -- I think it's largely down to the original, bare florescent tube lighting, which would have been replaced had this store ever gotten its Lifestyle remodel; all Lifestyle stores have had their deluxe lighting replaced with brighter, more generic stuff over the past decade or so, but even that new stuff is better than this.

ReplyDeleteWow, yes, this is very sterile looking. The nicer looking floors here gives this a better look than the Modern store you posted a few weeks ago, but it's still really boring looking. At least it isn't boring and dingy! I think even with better lighting, this would still look sterile. It needs better colors and decor to fix the dullness. Colorful Lifestyle v2's use of local flair helps. Of course, this area would be lime green with Colorful Lifestyle v2!

DeleteYeah, Colorful Lifestyle v2 is pretty much the opposite of Modern when it comes to looking sterile! There are a lot of things I like about Modern, especially the fancier versions that we haven't gotten around here, but the Colorful Lifestyle variants have it beat in this regard.
