Unfortunately, 1956 doesn't appear to have been an era of particularly interesting architecture for Safeway, especially compared with the Marina stores that were just a few years away. (Admittedly, I haven't been able to confirm that this store actually opened as a Safeway, but I've seen others with a similar look.) The design, with a long, flat, plain soffit over a large array of windows below, looks similar enough to Safeway's 70s-80s designs that I had suspected the facade was redone at some point, but historic aerial imagery seems to suggest that there hasn't been a major change, at least.
