In the light

Seeing all of the skylights in this place made me quite interested to see how it would look during the daytime, with natural light substituting for neon light. So a couple days after that initial visit, I headed back on a bright, sunny day right around noon to get a few more pictures. (Though the sun really spoiled this one, being low on the horizon and right behind the main entrance, which I was trying to get a decent daytime picture of!)

  1. Sometimes I observe strange things in photos and this is probably one of those times, lol. It's a bit odd to me to see a mall with those big sliding automatic doors, much less two sets of them, like we'd expect to find at a modern supermarket or discount store. I suppose this is mostly the function of me mostly shopping at malls built in the 1960s through the early 1980s where the mall entrances are generally small and narrow. Usually they have an automatic door that works by pushing a button and most people enter using a manual door. This mall is obviously much newer and was built after ADA laws were passed so I suppose it makes sense that it was designed with automatic doors.

    1. Interesting! Automatic doors are quite common at malls around here, even among the oldest malls. I wonder if it's a climate thing, as automatic doors would probably let a lot of heat in during Texas summers -- though Spokane certainly doesn't have the relatively mild climate of Western Washington.

    2. Perhaps you're right that the malls here avoid automatic doors to prevent air conditioned air from escaping and from mosquitoes coming into the building. Here's a mall entrance at my local mall. As you can see here, the only automatic door is one that has to be manually operated by pressing a button. This mall opened in 1981. 3. Yeah, I've definitely visited a few malls that look like that, but only ones that are very small or dead -- the vast majority do have automatic sliding doors, at least at the main entrances. It's always interesting to hear about things like this that are completely different in other areas!
