Thrifty is owned by Sobeys, and has been for quite a while longer than Safeway, but it appears that Sobeys largely lets Thrifty and Safeway operate independently of each other. That includes Thrifty's long-running "eat happy" tagline, and the accompanying smile logo, which I didn't think anything of as a kid but which I now find rather creepy!
