Where the produce department eventually peters out, the old checkout space is instead filled by more random pallet drops of junk food, primarily soda this time. Interestingly, I just noticed that there seems to be a second customer service desk up here, just beyond the closed-off doorway, sitting unsigned and probably mostly out of use -- it really seems like the grocery department here was originally run as if it was its own separate store, just barely connected to the general merchandise side. (I will note that unlike some other chains, particularly Kmart, Fred Meyer never officially ran stores completely divided between groceries and general merchandise; however, I have heard that a lot of their older buildings were designed with a strong separation between the sides, just like this store.)
