80s deli

On this visit, the deli and bakery seemed to be completely untouched in the remodel (I'm not sure if that changed when they finally returned to install the wall signage elsewhere in the store). The decor here isn't super interesting, being just some plain lettering stuck on a marbled grey wall with checkerboard trim, but I was still happy to be able to see it in person.

  1. The decor might not have been interesting by 1980s standards, but here in the 2020s, this is super interesting! I'm surprised they didn't update this, but maybe they did so eventually. It looks neat though.

I wonder why they said 'Salad' and 'Sandwich' instead of 'Salads' and 'Sandwiches,' but who knows. I was talking to a local Houston Safeway enthusiast the other day and we were talking about old 1970s-1980s Houston Safeways and how some of them said 'Drug' on the front of the store and some said 'Drugs'. I guess Safeway didn't have a consistent plan for that! Then you have this Krogway (Kroger in an old Safeway) in the Dallas area that at one time said 'Drug Store' on the front! I'm sure the Safeway didn't have that, but who knows. Kroger has removed those signs in more recent times anyway. Link: https://goo.gl/maps/jWyRNqC8qKyCnoEq8

You can more or less see the typical Texas Safeway raised front end with the security catwalk at that Kroger back when it had Food 4 Less decor before it got Neighborhood. In Dallas, for whatever reason, Safeway used the large squares instead of the continuous thin strip of one-way mirror like is the case at that 1987 Safeway you have been showing: https://goo.gl/maps/FQbh5Xvkw5MYHwEE6

    1. Yeah, it's just a lot more bland than the decor packages that many other chains were using in the 80s!

I've kind of given up on understanding weird pluralization issues like that. It's less weird than the "energy drink" and similar signs that I recently posted from that Lifestyle v1.9 Safeway! Speaking of Safeway, their branding before the 2005 logo was generally "Safeway Food & Drug", so I guess they settled on the singular for that one 🙂
