I had originally thought that perhaps the checkouts extended to take up more of this space, but looking at the ceiling up here, I doubt it -- there's extra lighting where the checkouts are, plus some weird little mirrored things that I suspect were somehow used from the security catwalk for surveillance of the checkouts. It's possible that Fred Meyer just removed these extras when they removed some of the checkouts, but I highly doubt they would have gone to that effort here, especially since Paraline ceilings from the 80s probably aren't super simple to fix in this day and age. (Most of the ones at SeaTac that I mentioned earlier on in this series have been removed in recent years as a result of the difficulty of replacing pieces when they get damaged.)
