This store was built in 1962, as part of the Umpqua Shopping Center (that's what it's called today, at least) in this small town in the center of the Oregon Coast. I had seen pictures of this store in the past (such as this nice view from before the Lifestyle remodel), but had completely forgotten about it when I was planning my Oregon Coast trip last summer; thankfully, I ended up driving by it anyway and was able to stop by!
I tried to post this last night, but Blogger wasn't having any part of that. I'll try again today.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad you couldn't see this place before it was renovated, but oh well. There's still a lot of retroness on the outside here. It'll be interesting to take a look inside.
I had not heard of Reedsport, OR before so I looked it up on Google Maps. It is a small place, but oddly enough, the Safeway has a competitor across the street in the form of McKay's Market. McKay's Market looks like a local chain with a handful of stores. There really aren't any great interior photos of the Reedsport store, but other McKay's Market stores look like older buildings with somewhat modern and well-kept interiors. It seems like an interesting local chain.
Yeah, it definitely is surprising that there are two grocery stores here. I suspect that most of the business comes from tourists passing through (like I was) -- Reedsport is in a good location to take advantage of that, being at the intersection of 101 and one of the few east-west routes connecting to I-5.
