And to wrap up this set, here's a terrible picture of the shopping center's McDonald's, a very strange-looking version of the copper mansard roof design that was once super common in the northwest (strange-looking because of that extra copper-roofed entryway canopy sticking out from the front right corner, plus the whole building looks quite a bit smaller than a normal mansard McDonald's). Sadly, it doesn't look like this anymore, though I'm not sure what exactly it does look like because the remodel was still in progress last time I passed by here.
Anyway, that's it for Westwood Village! Tomorrow, starting a new ultra-long set (yay?).
Huh, that canopy thing is a strange design. That's odd if that was somewhat standard in the NW. It's also strange how closely together the little white trim pieces are on the mansard roof. Those are usually spaced out more than they are here. I guess this is the week for strange looking McDonald's on retail blogs as PlazaACME posted a really strange one to his blog the other day!
ReplyDeleteThe only standard thing is the copper-ness of the roof -- the rest of it is super weird!
DeleteOh, okay. I misread the part about the canopy. I wonder if this McDonald's was a former McDonald's Express walk-up location at one time? We have a small McDonald's here in Houston in front of a Kroger that is a former Safeway. Anyway, in the 1990s, the McDonald's used to be a McDonald's Express that was walk-up and drive-thru only and I think they had a limited menu as well. The store was eventually turned into a regular, but very small McDonald's.

I notice the McDonald's in your photo has two doors towards the back of the side of the store. Are those employee entrances or are they external entrance restrooms?
Hmm... could be, but looking at old aerials, it doesn't appear that this McDonald's was ever expanded. It doesn't seem quite small enough to be an Express location, but who knows. Those doors seem to just be employee access of some kind. The exterior of the building also seems different from Express locations, being wood paneling rather than concrete block. It's certainly an odd store, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was originally built as something other than a standard McDonald's!
