The closest thing Westwood Village has to a department store anchor these days is Marshalls, which takes up the other half of the building that houses Bed Bath & Beyond. It's interesting seeing Marshalls and Ross now coexisting in the same shopping center, since they're basically the same concept.
It's not uncommon for Ross and other similar type chains to cluster near one another here in Houston. In fact, one of our newest powercenters has Ross, TJMaxx, and Burlington literally all right next to one another! It seems these types of stores are taking the same approach that Sears and others took decades ago when indoor malls were being built and stores like Sears would open up alongside their closest competitors like Montgomery Ward and JCPenney. I suppose these stores know where the bargain hunter audience is and wants to be there. Here's a Google Streetview of the new Houston powercenter. It's pretty boring as far as usually boring powercenters go: https://goo.gl/maps/1RQTRMZowVTsTmXv8
ReplyDeleteIn fact, we were discussing Mattress Firm and other similar types of retailers who are all over the place. Well, Ross is starting to take on a similar role. They've been opening a lot of new stores in the past couple of years...often in spaces abandoned by other retailers. It's hard to believe that back in the 1980s, Ross actually came to Houston and failed and left! They came back in the 1990s and, boy, they've been a lot more successful during their second run here.
