Floating checkouts

This is probably the best picture I have showing the weird center checkout setup here, with produce on the "wrong" side. From this angle, that floral sign also looks to be somewhat strangely placed. My visit to this store earlier this week reminded me of another weird effect of this checkout setup -- if you're coming in through the main entrance (either from the street or the parking garage, so it's not just another effect of grocery store designers assuming everyone's coming from the parking) and want to go into the main part of the store (pretty much everything except for produce and the service departments), you have to either walk all the way around the checkouts (which extend beyond where I was standing when I took this picture) or cut through them the wrong way. It appears that the original design had the self checkouts at the other end of the store, which would have made it a little less awkward, but this is still such a strange design.
