On experimental stores

What's perhaps even more intriguing about this store is its time before the Neighborhood remodel. Previously, this store had what I had been calling the Greenwood decor, because I thought that store was the only one with that oddball decor that I suspect was an experiment that got dumped in favor of Banner; it turns out that there was a second one (and I wish I had known about that when I was planning my Portland trip in 2019, since it may or may not have still had that decor at that point). Seeing that this store had two experimental decor packages in a row (Greenwood and FM Neighborhood), and so did the Greenwood store (Greenwood and a weird late-stage version of Banner), this makes me wonder... does Fred Meyer have experimental stores? And if so, do they have ones that aren't just used for failed experiments? Because the two that I just mentioned had, between them, three decor packages that never went anywhere. On the other hand, there have been some other (though smaller) Fred Meyer decor experiments (especially around the end of the Northwest Decor era), so maybe it's just a big coincidence. Who knows.

  1. Definitely interesting to think about, regardless of what the answer may be!

    1. Sure is! I doubt we'll ever know for certain, but it's an interesting theory at least.
