I have to give QFC quite a bit of credit for making this store feel reasonably open and not cramped and cluttered, considering its size! Back here along the back wall, we have all of the service departments -- meat (off to the right), the deli (in the middle), and the bakery (to the left). This picture makes the store look quite a bit smaller than it actually is -- it's got a double-gabled roof, and this picture is from the point where the two come together, not the right wall of the store. (I may well be the only one who would be confused by something like that, but I thought I'd mention it anyway!)
This comment is about the 'Drumsticks' photo, but the anonymous comment box isn't working in that post for me right now. That occasionally happens with certain posts. It seems that it won't bring up the Captcha image when I hit the Publish button for some reason. Switching browsers doesn't usually help. Anyway, I'll post my reply to that image here I suppose.
ReplyDeleteIs it usual for people to refer to soda as being 'pop' in the NW? It's quite unusual to see 'pop' written on the aisle marker! I think 'soda' and 'cola' are more typical generic words for that used here in Houston.
Huh, I have no idea why that would happen. Must be a Blogger issue... I don't think Google is really maintaining the software very much these days.
DeleteAnyways, I honestly don't know. I was all ready to write that it was normally called "soda" around here, but I searched around and it looks like Western Washington is pretty well divided between "soda" and "pop" people, maybe even trending towards "pop". So I guess that just goes to show that my personal experience isn't necessarily representative of everyone around here...
I was trying to continue our conversation about Best Products stores in NW, but the anonymous comment box isn't working for me there either now! I'll try it here.
DeleteUpon further research, it seems that Best Products did have stores in the NW, but there might be a good reason why you have not heard about it. It seems that there was a catalog showroom retailer in the Seattle area called Jafco who had a chain of stores in Washington and Oregon. Jafco was sold to Best Products in 1982 and all Jafco stores were converted to Best Products stores by 1986.

Given the timeframe of the Jafco-to-Best conversion, I wouldn't be surprised if the stores there mostly had the Store of Tomorrow design from the video since that design was launched in 1985. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the converted Jafcos had the Regency design as well though. Perhaps you'll be able to track down the former Jafco/Best Products stores in the NW and see if any of them have interesting tenants now!
Ah, Jafco, I think that's the name they had mentioned! I had no idea they became Best stores. I remember looking up Best at some point because of how cool their stores were, but I thought I had found that they weren't present around here -- maybe it's just that they didn't have such cool stores here since they just took over Jafcos. Of course, they were also long gone by the time I would have been looking at these things...
