Edith Macefield House

Right across the street from the PCC is another place of local lore -- the Edith Macefield House. This is often referred to as the Up House referring to the Pixar movie, though if I'm understanding correctly, it's not actually directly related other than being used in advertising for the movie, as that had been under development long before the development here started. Obviously, this is a hold-out house, with Edith not wanting to move out in time for the construction to start around it, though this isn't exactly the typical story as she wasn't exactly anti-development (she just wanted to live in the house as long as she lived and then allow it to be sold, which is what happened, just too late for the developers) and because this was never a residential neighborhood (this was always the only house around, surrounded by industrial uses). There's also another property on the block that refused to sell, and which is a bit more interesting to me -- Mikes Chili Parlor, a cool little building with a bar that probably hasn't changed much since the Ballard Bridge was built.

That's it for this week! Next week, down the street for a rather less successful upscale grocery store.

(Oh, and to anonymous -- is this car more like what you were expecting for a wealthy person's store? 😉)

  1. Oh yeah, that Porsche is the kind of car I'd expect to see at a wealthy store, lol. Well, if it was a really wealthy person's store, I suppose we'd see the cars that the butlers drive, lol. That Audi SUV in the back there isn't cheap either. It's kind of funny seeing these expensive German cars near a Ross Dress for Less, but I suppose Ross has some expensive neighbors like PCC!

Speaking of Ross, those are popping up here in Houston all over the place. They already had a big presence, but they've been opening several more stores here in 2020. It's strange seeing such a nice Ross as we see in this photo as most Ross stores around here open up in older shopping centers which are usually not prime ones.

    1. Ha! Yeah, I suppose it isn't that wealthy, but still...

And yeah, it is an interesting juxtaposition, but I feel like PCC is actually the one that's out of place here. This is a pretty nice neighborhood, but I'm surprised it's high-end enough for PCC to succeed here. Then again, high-end/natural food places do seem to do quite well in general in this region...

  2. I saw Mikes Chili Parlor on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and they had a tiny part of the show explaining the situation. Funny that it's right there in the same area as this store and the so-called Up house!

    1. Interesting -- I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it showed up on that show! And yeah, Seattle's a surprisingly small place, and the actually interesting stuff (in my opinion) is confined to a small portion of Seattle, so you might be surprised by how many local landmarks are close to one another...
