The back aisle of this store is under a low soffit, for no obvious reason. Most Marina Safeways were built with a flat-roofed section behind the main salesfloor, but this one was built with the arch going all the way back, so the high ceiling is still present above the ceiling here. The only thing I can think is that maybe there's some mechanical equipment here -- and for all I know, it might have been built like this to hide the mechanical equipment as part of Lake Oswego's aesthetic requirements.
