Presumably Portland's most famous retail sight (and, honestly, one of their most famous landmarks overall) is Powell's Books, a giant independent bookstore in downtown Portland that opened in 1971. I'll let Wikipedia tell the history here, since it's a long story, but it's cool how much of a frontrunner they have been on so many bookstore trends, helping them stay relevant throughout all the changes in that industry in recent years. I loved this place growing up, and it was a big part of why I loved coming to Portland as a kid!
