Safeway Pinehurst remodel update: That's all, folks!

As far as I can tell, the remodel at my Pinehurst Safeway is completely done now! In fact, it was probably all done last week, but I gave it another week just to be sure. Seeing as that's just over a month since it started, this was a very quick remodel (though not quite as quick as it seemed at first).
Thankfully, the very nice cafe seating area did not end up getting permanently removed after all, though it's still closed for the foreseeable future (in-person restaurant dining reopened a while ago, though since the world is still falling apart, not a ton of restaurants have reopened and while I suspect stores could reopen their seating areas as well, they don't seem to be in any rush to do so) and lost its actual sign.
Sadly, I guess this is going to be the finished state for the right-hand wall, with no wood trim or signage and an extremely bland paint job. At least the wine sign doesn't have a hole in it anymore, though!
For the most part, the checkerboard of ceiling tiles did eventually get fixed, though there are still some incorrect ones like the one right above the pharmacy sign here.
The health and beauty aisles kept their rare Lifestyle v2 category marker bands (a nice surprise, though these really cheap remodels of existing Safeways do tend to leave behind lots of remnants). They have been supplemented by new category markers, though, and they don't always match up. Heck, on the left side of this picture, neither the old nor the new category markers match the products: That's clearly lotion, not sun protection or bar soap/body wash! I'm not sure how that could happen when the new category markers were just put in a couple weeks ago...
I thought this juxtaposition was fairly amusing -- who knew hair dye helped with incontinence?? Anyways, unlike the (way cooler) light bars that Retail Retell just posted, the sign bands here do appear to have been designed to allow for modification -- it's just that no one bothered to adjust them.
Somewhat unusually, the pharmacy got new Brown Decor drop-off and pick-up signs -- but for some reason, they were both installed over the same counter, even though there are three counters here and at least two of them are active. I'm pretty sure they were both installed over the pick-up counter. I know that some stores tend to only use the pick-up counter for both, but this doesn't seem to be one of those stores.
Nothing too exciting in this view (or most of this set, to be honest, since this store was almost all done the last time I showed it), but here's a look down the left wall. The ceiling was all put back to how it should be, but on the floor, the corner guards on the coffin cases appear to have been forgotten. They had been sitting on top of the upright cases off to the left, but instead of being reinstalled, they just disappeared at some point.
Nothing too exciting in produce, either, though I don't think I mentioned before that this store didn't get the typical "Organic" sign, meaning that the produce sign got the fancy wood-grid background instead. What's weird is that this store went from two produce signs to one, the exact opposite of what happened in most of these Safeway remodels. I'm surprised at how nicely this picture turned out, too!
And finally for this store, here's a random look at the cafe seating area from the self checkouts. I do quite like all the windows in this part of the store, but sadly they don't do a great job of bringing in natural light to the rest of the store.

And that's it for another, relatively short-running remodel live updates series, something that I doubt I'll be doing for a while now! But I said that a while back, so you never know what could happen...

  1. Thanks for the link! Yep, as soon as you mentioned those categories not matching what's stocked below, that's exactly what I thought of...

    1. You're welcome! It's sad here, since the original design seems to have been intended to accommodate changes, it's just that people stopped caring at some point...

  2. This Safeway decor is quite plain in some spots. Maybe it's too plain in some areas, but I do like some aspects of it and at least the plain parts are inoffensive at the very least. The wood trim (probably fake wood) with the lowercase sub-department names in places like the bakery and deli is quite nice, IMO. The wood and lowercase combination was a common combo in late 1980s department and grocery stores and this reminds me a lot of that. In my mind at least, I associate that design with some of the nice, upscale stores which used that design in the 1980s. Sometimes that was combined with neon for a striking look.

An example of wood, lowercase letters, and neon which still exists today would be the Astrodome area Fiesta Mart here in Houston. This is a locally famous location mostly due to it's location, but I'm sure the well-preserved and maintained 1980s look has something to do with the fame as well. One very neat aspect of this store is the small storefronts built into the pillars supporting the front facade. There probably aren't very many font facade pillars elsewhere in the US which double as a key shop and luggage store! Also, and this isn't obvious from the photos, but the sign on the front facade is an animated one with flashing lights and neon. It's a touch of Las Vegas here in Houston!

Back to the Safeway, I think the wood trim here works better than the Kroger 'Artisan' decor package that Retail Retell recently showed on his blog recently. I also like the wooden pharmacy department. I'm not sure what hair care products has to do with incontinence though, lol.

I've seen pictures of this Safeway decor style before. I think at least one of those examples was with a newer store where it combined with open ceilings and concrete floors. It didn't look nearly as nice there, but that's not really the fault of the decor package as much as it is the fault of the architectural style. Still, those open ceiling and concrete floor stores need more color in their decor to break up the visual monotony and industrialness.

I'm not sure if any of our local Randall's (what Safeway goes by here in Houston in current times, Safeway did operate in Houston under their own name many years ago during a previous crack at this market) locations have this new decor or will receive it. Randall's is a shrinking chain here in Houston, but they're almost down to their core stores in upscale, urban areas with little competition and I figure those stores probably do pretty well even if the suburban stores with competition were not able to compete. Given that, maybe Safeway will make some investments into the remaining Houston Randall's, but those mostly currently have the common 'Lifestyle' decor and I quite like that package since it has pleasing, warm colors and wood trim (with lowercase letters, but in a different way than the newer decor shown in this post). I don't think it looks dated. I know 'Lifestyle' has detractors, but I think it looks pretty good and it fits with the layouts of Randall's locations (most of which opened before Safeway took over Randall's). Ironically, we even have a few Randall's in old Albertsons locations. In the Dallas area, Tom Thumb (what Randall's goes by in the Dallas area) and Albertsons both co-exist. I'm not sure how exactly Safeway-Albertsons differentiates the two brands. I think Tom Thumb/Randall's are supposed to be a bit more upscale, but I'm not sure how much more upscale that they can be as compared to Albertsons.

    1. Wow, that Fiesta Mart is a cool store -- thanks for sharing! I particularly love the font used in the neon signage, but there's tons of cool stuff to go around there.

Speaking of Safeway, yeah, there's lots of weird stuff going on with their decor packages. The Oregon division, for example, is using some really ugly variations of Lifestyle v3 instead of the Brown Decor that the most regions are using (or at least they were as of last summer). And speaking of older decor packages, Lifestyle v2 (which this store used to have) is still my all-time favorite Safeway decor package and I really never understood why so many people don't like it.
