Road sign

In at least one way, this place used to be even better -- until just a few years ago, it had a vintage (quite possibly original) road sign, which was sadly replaced with this extremely generic thing. Sure, it was clearly much the worse for wear and surely hadn't rotated for many years, but it was still much nicer than this.

  1. Ooh, very cool road sign in that street view imagery! I can tell it probably was a hassle for the stores to deal with, though. Also digging the combo Taco Bell/Pizza Hut here, I don't think there are many of those left anymore...

    1. I imagine! It looked rather beat up from some angles too.

And I didn't realize those were so rare, though now that I think about it I can't think of any others I've seen recently (especially with the old book-style (?) signage. Taco Bell/KFC combos, on the other hand, are super common around here -- there are hardly any KFCs that aren't combined with a Taco Bell!

    2. I think the signage is meant to be a flag, though it definitely resembles a book more so. A lot of the KFC/Taco Bells seem to have had the same signage, although most seem to have remodeled; and the flag thing is a bit more obvious on the rare, mythical KenTacoHut: https://amp.reddit.com/r/tacobell/comments/8vynhv/i_pledge_allegiance_to_the_flag/

    3. I didn't realize Taco Bell/Pizza Hut co-locations were uncommon either as we have one near me here in Houston. In fact, this is an outparcel at the shopping center with the ex-Albertsons Kroger that got flooded during Hurricane Harvey, was gutted on the inside according to a neat photo on Google Maps images, and was then re-opened with the sad cupcake 'Fresh and Local' decor package. Retail Retell knows this Kroger well, lol. Of course, the Pizza Hut just has an Express menu. Link: https://goo.gl/maps/f5vm3zBBBVqwojW58

I can think of at least three Taco Bell/KFC co-locations in my area so perhaps these are not as rare as NW Retail mentioned. Two of them are in a Kroger shopping center or across the street from a Kroger. In Houston, all roads lead to Kroger it seems which is funny because we have a lot of grocery competition here, lol. The third is not directly by a Kroger, but it's just a mile or two away from the 2000s era Kroger Signature with the Food 4 Less decor package. I've only been to one of these Taco Bell/KFC co-locations in recent times, but from the pictures, it seems that these locations get interiors that are more KFC than Taco Bell. I'm not sure if that is common.

Truly bizarre things happen in Houston. Out in East Houston, there is a Long John Silver/Taco Bell co-location which still exists even though LSJ is no longer a Yum brand (another such combo still exists in the Katy suburb in Houston). The bizarre things don't stop there. Directly next to the LSJ/Taco Bell is a Whataburger. Ok, let's ignore that for now as the Whataburger does not fit into anything. Directly next to the Whataburger is a KFC in a standalone building (standalone KFCs are still common in Houston). What's directly next to the KFC? A Pizza Hut/Wing Street co-location! It's not quite a KenTacoHut under one roof, but this is a KenTacoJohnHutStreet with Whataburger thrown in all within a baseball throw of one another! The newest Google Streetview of this area is from 2016, but it looks like nothing has changed in modern times: https://goo.gl/maps/WXMdiCpB5ZMKCnTq8

One last Houston oddity which remains is the marriage of two former Yum brands. We still have a Long John Silver/A&W Hamburgers co-location over by the Greenspoint-area Fry's Electronics. Link: https://goo.gl/maps/ppVhR4wfU4gxnXed8

    4. Retail Retell: Ah, that makes sense! The two-piece one doesn't look particularly flag-like to me, though it probably would if it was on a flagpole-like support as in that one! Also, KenTacoHut, ha!

Anon: That's cool to see! Fast food is way outside of my area of expertise or interest (as you can probably tell), but these combo restaurants are always interesting!
