When the new theater was built, it didn't take up all of the parking lot alcove, creating this weird (and not very inviting) alleyway to access the mall entrance. It would have been nicer if they had made this an interior hallway, but perhaps there are some service functions back they didn't want to relocate, or some sort of weird building code issue.
They may simply have not wanted to bother constructing an addition, either :P
