One last look up auto row

The Aurora Ave strip was developed in the mid 20th century as a car-oriented retail strip, and, as you can see here, not much has changed since -- particularly relative to the rest of the region. Despite the area's reasonably good location and great transportation access, developers have been highly reluctant to build here, with most of the new development being more car-centric stuff or affordable housing for extremely low-income people (as this is one of the only places in the city where the neighbors won't rally against that... or at least not as much as those other areas). It's hard to say why this is, but I'm sure it's largely due to the stigma (and self-fulfilling prophecy) of Aurora as being one of the city's poorest, highest-crime areas such that not enough people want to live (or build housing) here. Heck, I suppose I'm part of that problem too, as this is one of the only parts of the city that I would not want to move to -- and all of the others are because they are too high-income, whiny parts of town! 🙂

Tomorrow -- a new store for Christmas!
