Even more strange (especially considering the deli-flavored decor), the one service department in this corner is the bakery. I'm sure this isn't the only Safeway out there with a service bakery and not a service deli, but that's quite an unusual sight! It's obviously a small service department, without the cake counter that you normally see, but it does appear to offer custom decorated cakes, which is what I tend to consider the minimum requirement for a service bakery.
Following this store's Modern remodel, this alcove is now signed just as the bakery, but it still has its (non-service) deli elements. That's even weirder than the Lifestyle-era setup, and further shows that Safeway's decor designers don't know what to do with this odd situation!
