While the exterior signage may not look the part, this store was one of the most outdated Safeways I've ever visited, built in the 70s and last remodeled in the 80s. Stores that have gone so long without remodels tend to be neglected for one of two reasons -- either poor financial performance or a desire to build a replacement store -- so I wasn't surprised to find an auction listing for this store the other day. (In this case, I was somewhat surprised that it was the second option, with a fancy new Safeway opening a short distance away -- strangely, on the site of another former Safeway that closed over a decade ago! The whole area seems a bit run-down, but looking at census data, it's a solidly middle-class place, which goes to show how much wealth there really is in the Bay Area.)
By the way, South San Francisco isn't just a name I've assigned to this store, like the directional names you see on this blog normally are -- it's actually the name of a city that is south of, though not directly bordering, San Francisco. Whoever named it clearly wasn't feeling very creative!
