At some point leading up to the closing, probably as part of the general tidying-up that this store got over the year-plus prior to the announcement, most of the checkout islands were removed, leaving some weirdly large, empty tiled actionways in their wake. It looks like Sears did a surprisingly good job of tidying up after removing them -- I would have expected big floor scars like we saw in the old shoe department, but the tile cleaned up pretty nicely.
