Merry store closing sale

I feel like whoever decided to hang a "merry christmas" wreath on the same wall as one of the store closing signs must have intended to set up this ironic scene. I wonder how many other people took a picture of this exact same thing, since I'm sure there were plenty of people that decided to check out the region's last Sears during its closing sale.

I remember when it was announced that the Mall of the Mainland, a mall in the Houston area, was closing. It was announced in early December 2013, and the mall was set to close at the end of January 2014, or close to it. They had already put up Christmas decorations in the mall before the announcement and they left them up during the Christmas season. Now, granted, there was only like four or five stores left in the mall, plus Sears, but it still felt weird seeing a decorated mall knowing that it was just about to close. I even took pictures of it, and you know I rarely take retail photos! It was easy to do, there weren't any other shoppers in the mall at all. Literally nobody else, lol.

The mall didn't put up any signs about it closing, but still, it was strange to see it decorated knowing the mall was about to die for good! Oddly enough, the mall did partially reopen some years later, which seemed highly unlikely to ever happen at the time! The Sears there closed in 2018 or 2019 though.

    1. I imagine that's a relatively common situation considering how many stores/malls close shortly after christmas. This one is a little bit stranger since it closed shortly before christmas, but it's possible that the decorations were already up before the closure was announced (which would mean that they were put up quite early, but that's not entirely surprising these days).
