Another weird thing about this setup is that someone actually went to the effort of pulling out all of the bulky shoe fixtures! The scars they left on the carpet show just how long it has been since the carpet in this store was cleaned... yuck.
The funny thing is that, even to this day, Sears still has a carpet cleaning division! I remember that my family would call them out to the house in the 1980s to clean the carpets. They certainly could have used a Sears steam carpet cleaning service here! Sears carpet cleaning doesn't appear to be a national service anymore, but it looks like they are in most of the major cities in the US and they have an office in Tacoma, so it wouldn't have been far from here.
