Time for a rather obscure piece of Safeway history! Pak 'n Save was one of the many brands Safeway bought in the 80s, and became one of their first low-cost formats (something that they've made plenty of unsuccessful attempts at over the years, including a "Save 'n Pack" version in Florida), peaking in the 90s before being largely abandoned in the 00s, with all but two stores closed or rebranded to Safeway. Of the remaining stores, one got a relatively normal Lifestyle v2 remodel and dual branding, leaving this as the last vestige of the Pak 'n Save format.
It's very interesting to see that dual branded store!
ReplyDeleteThe dual branding at the other store is strange - I'm surprised Safeway even keeps Pak n' Save around anymore considering there's pretty much no difference between this store and a regular Safeway, unless this is just another one of those trademark preservation things.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the dual branding was to keep the trademark alive, but this store is a bit weirder -- it probably fell into the gap of being profitable enough to keep around, but not profitable enough to get a remodel. The NorCal division seems to have quite a few of those compared to other Albertsons divisions (Colorado also used to have quite a few but a lot of them have closed or been remodeled in recent years).
