This store was built in the late 70s as part of La Jolla Village Square, a mini-mall with a small interior section (which I totally missed on my visit as I thought it was just a multi-story strip mall, oops!). It is a seriously ugly building on the outside, but the inside holds something interesting: one of the first Urban Mix prototypes (quite possibly the very first one)! This is the store that was featured in renderings I found in a design student's portfolio back in 2018, providing the retail community's first glimpse at the decor package. Considering that it's one of my all-time favorite Kroger packages, I absolutely had to visit this store on my big California road trip.
