Open elevator

I haven't talked about the elevator yet, so here we go. As far as 70s mall elevators go, this one isn't exactly flashy, but it is interesting just how little of the elevator shaft is enclosed. Glass elevators these days normally have fully glassed-in shafts; I wonder if building codes stopped allowing this sort of design at some point.
