At least some of the "regular" checkouts are the kind that can be flipped around and converted to a self checkout. I've seen pictures of these before but hadn't seen them in person; sadly, I didn't end up getting to use one of them. I also didn't use the scan-as-you-go system -- I find those difficult to use even here in the US, let alone in Italy when they would be in a language I only kind of understand! And speaking of difficult, Esselunga also has those annoying barcode-scanning exit gates, made even more annoying by the fact that Esselunga's receipts have multiple barcodes on them and nothing obvious to tell you which one to use!
